Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

We present a test for partners in committed relationships who are fans of the horror genre: Sit down with your loved one and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like typical body horror, but inside Together exists a intense meditation about how we choose to love each other.

A Debut Feature Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together is the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for over ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the actors bring a special spark to their characters, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The narrative starts when the couple move from the big city to the countryside for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, sure, but that’s mostly where the tropes conclude. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the two fall into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The entire film is a slow burn of scares, weaving in moments of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but never too gross) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes during something horrific). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together neatly and presents them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and distant from his social circle. He is terrified of the concept of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is intensified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie refrains from painting Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

The couple grapple with the sort of issues that come with any relationship a decade in. At their core, they still love one another. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these fears of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the allegory does not come across as hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a strong argument for remaining unattached. On the other hand, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could act as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply turn to your other half and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu now.
